Did you know that all during the month of July we celebrate the humble Hot Dog Bun? With National Hot Dog Day being celebrated on July 21 this year we want to help you create the ultimate DIY Hot Dog Board to share with family and friends. Want to be the ‘Top Dog’ at the BBQ this summer then follow our 4 simple steps to hot dog happiness.

Step 1: Pick up your freshly baked Gourmet Hot Dog Buns from your local COBS Bread (Open daily all summer long)

Step 2: Beef, pork, turkey or veggie hot dogs? Choose one or choose them all, whichever you select just make sure they’re hot and there’s plenty of them! Most prefer their hot dogs grilled however you can also boil, steam, microwave or even pan fry your hot dogs.

Step 3: Try all the toppings! While the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (yes that is a real thing!) advise that only people aged under 18 should place ketchup on their hot dog and report that mustard is the most loved condiment for hot dog lovers we say why stop there? Fill your Gourmet Hot Dog Bun with relish, onions, salsa, cheese or pickles.

Step 4: Admire your daring DIY hot dog creation and then eat & enjoy. Repeat steps 1-4 as often as necessary…or as far your waistband allows!

Looking for some more inspiration for your hot dog making?

We’ve created two unique recipes this summer for all our hot dog loving fans.

First up we have the Gourmet Hot Dog – Filled with beer-braised sausage, veggies and your choice of mustard to create a rich and full-flavoured BBQ treat that’s sure to be a red-hot ‘wiener’ all summer long.

Garden Hot Dog

Not forgetting about our meat-free lovers we’ve created the Beyond Sausage® Garden Hot Dog which might just be the best vegetarian hot dog we’ve seen. Loaded with flavour with thanks to our Gourmet Hot Dog Bun and bursting with vegetables and toppings this recipe is a real crowd pleaser.

Ps. Why did the dachshund have to sit in the shade? … Because it was a hot dog!

June 18th is International Picnic Day and we want to share some tasty suggestions for packing the perfect picnic (it isn’t truly a picnic without some of these fresh baked goods). But first – some history: Picnic was originally a 17th Century French word, picque-nique. Its meaning was similar to today’s meaning: a social gathering where each attendee brings a share of the food. Want to really impress your friends? Bring along some of our delicious French pastries and wow them with your new trivia on picnics!

Whether you’re grabbing your bike and heading to your local park or simply having lunch in the garden, grab some COBS Bread supplies and make some memories.

However you choose to enjoy the day, play some games, listen to music or simply enjoy the food and conversation, a picnic outside is always a good plan!

So who’s ready to share some delicious food and drink with family and friends this weekend?

These are our go-to picnic pals that are sure to delight:

Apricot Delight Log

A true delight, the Apricot Delight Log has juicy apricots, raisins and currants that appeal to anyone looking for a fruity addition to their perfect picnic. Enjoy on its own or with some Bonne Maman juicy jam.

Cape Seed Loaf

The Cape Seed Loaf is not only nutty and full of texture, it’s packed with the nutrients of nine grains and seeds. Slice thick pieces for a classic smoked meat sandwich that’ll keep you full for hours while outside. See one of our favourite Cape Seed recipes that never disappoints.

Sunflower Flax Sourdough Vienna

Our Sunflower Flax Sourdough Vienna has a thick crunchy crust and a dense flavourful center. This makes it a perfect accompaniment to your favourite cheese. With the perfect mix of sunflower seeds and flax seeds this bread is sure to impress at the picnic table.

Ps. All the above breads are Vegan Suitable.

Not forgetting the ultimate addition to any picnic – scrumptious scones. Choose a 6-pack to takeaway with one of each flavour to keep everyone smiling and satisfied. Feeling sweet? Bring along one (or all) of our delicious Danishes options to enjoy for the perfect picnic pack.

Share any Picnic Pics with us by tagging @cobsbread on social. Happy Picnicking!

Wild Blueberries

August is National Blueberry month in Canada and we’d be remiss if we didn’t call attention to one of our favourite little berries! Have you ever wondered why the blueberries in our Danish are so tiny, yet still pack a flavour punch? It’s because we use Canadian wild blueberries. You’re probably wondering what the difference is. Well, as I’m sure you’ve heard before, bigger is not always better!

When you think of wild fruit, you might think of foraging through the bushes or picking blackberries on the side of the road with a ‘one for me one for the bucket mentality.’ That’s not quite the same with these wild blueberries. Instead of being planted by farmers, these lowbrush berries are spread naturally by underground runners (rhizomes) with farmers maintaining the wild strands.

Wild blueberries also have some extra benefits over regular blueberries! Since these berries are smaller than their full-sized siblings, they have a higher skin to pulp ratio, which means more antioxidant-rich pigment. In fact, the wild ones have twice the antioxidant capacity of cultivated blueberries.

This also means less water in the berry, so they freeze (and thaw) better than their big brothers! While looks aren’t everything, we also think they’re prettier! Ever cut inside a blueberry? It’s not exactly blue inside!

So why do we actually use these pint-sized berries? They taste better! We use them in our Lemon and Blueberry Scone as well as our Wild Blueberry & Custard Danish, Wild Blueberry Teatime and our new Apple Berry Danish!

Want even more blueberries? (Of course you do.) Top our Wild Blueberry Danish with Blueberry Basil Gelato! Check out that meal idea plus 3 more frozen toppings for Danishes on our blog post!

Do you think wild blueberries taste better? You’ll have to try one of our Danishes to taste for yourself! Learn more about our Danishes baked fresh daily or find a local bakery to pick up Danishes for your next summer feast.
